Hike Details: Sign up is required for this hike as we will be traveling to Salt Spring Island on the ferry. In order to minimize the number of vehicles needed over on Salt Spring, the number of participants must be known ahead of time. Each person will be responsible for their own passenger ferry fare. The cost of the ferry and fuel for the vehicles driven over to Salt Spring Island will be equally divided amongst the participants. The passenger fare is $10.70 and the vehicle fare is $31.35 plus a fuel surtax. These are return fares. A $20. fuel allowance will be allotted to each vehicle that travels over to Salt Spring Island. Each person should expect to contribute approximately $12. to $15. for vehicle and fuel costs, depending on the number of participants.
This hike will be in 3 parts.
We will start our day on Salt Spring Island with a visit to the world famous Saturday market in Ganges. Local crafters and artisans produce a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, baked goods, clothing, jewelry and a multitude of unique arts, crafts and one of a kind objects. Find your treasure! Local musicians provide entertainment that adds to the festive and colorful ambience of the market. We will have approximately 3 hours to wander around and have lunch before we head out to Ruckle Park for a hike. There are several bakeries, cafés and restaurants near the market to choose from or you may bring your own lunch. There are places to sit and enjoy a picnic lunch in Centennial Park where the market is held.
Part 2 of the hike will be at Ruckle Park. This is an old, still-working farm owned by the Ruckle family who have generously shared this amazing property with the public. Beautiful trails run through the forest, along the rocky coastline and all around the farm. Sheep and turkeys are residents here, so for this reason there are no dogs allowed in the area. For those who wish to just relax for an hour or so instead of hiking, there is a lovely spot to do so, with an interesting interpretive area to check out around the farm buildings. As this hike is optional, bringing a snack and beverage along would be a good idea; or perhaps even a book to read if you prefer to sit it out. We will be leaving the park at about 2:30 and heading back to the Fulford Harbour ferry for the 3:50 pm sailing to Swartz Bay.
Part 3 of the hike will be time spent exploring around Fulford Harbour before the ferry sailing back to Victoria. With our vehicles parked in the ferry line, we will have an hour or so to check out the little shops, bakery and mercantile that make this little village so unique. All in all, a fun day on Salt Spring!
Washrooms are available at the ferry terminals in Swartz Bay and Fulford Harbour, on the ferry, at the Saturday market in Centennial Park and at Ruckle Park.
What to Bring: there will be several options available for lunch at the market, or you can bring your own lunch. Bring a snack, beverage and bottled water along, and a walking stick and camera if desired.
Wear: Comfortable and sturdy shoes for walking and appropriate clothing for the weather, rain or shine. Dressing in layers is recommended for this type of activity. Bring sunscreen and wear a hat if necessary.
