Cancelled – Take A Hike: Fungi Walk – Mount Douglas Provincial Park
November 21 @ 10:00 am
Cancelled due to expanded COVID restrictions
Date: Saturday, November 21, 2020
Time: 10-2 p.m. (depending on pace of participants)
Where: Mount Douglas Provincial Park, Beach Parking Lot
Who: All ages and abilities. Dogs on leash
Directions: From downtown Victoria go north on Shelbourne Street (or Cedar Hill Road) to where Cedar Hill Road meets Cordova Bay Road and Ash Road at the park’s entrance. The beach parking lot is on the right. Coming from other directions, the park can also be accessed by taking Royal Oak Drive through onto Cordova Bay Road and the Mount Douglas Parkway. The beach parking lot will be on your left from this approach. We will meet here at 10 a.m.
Carpooling is recommended, although there is plenty of parking available.
Washrooms are available at the parking lot.
Hike Details: We will follow some of the easy to moderate trails that circle the lower circumference of Mt. Douglas. The focus will be on a discussion of the local fungi which is prevalent this time of year. We will be talking about the identification of mushrooms within the various family groups and the importance of their function in the natural world. This will be an information session only as foraging is not permitted in any federal or provincial parks. We will take some rest stops along the way as we enjoy the beautiful trails and huge trees that are present in this forest, as well as the scenic overlook from Little Mt. Doug.
Expect to spend about 3 to 4 hours on this hike, but the actual length of time will be determined by the pace of the participants. There are several options along the trails to return to the parking lot sooner for those who may need to leave earlier.
What to Bring: We will take short breaks along the way over the duration of the hike, so bring a lunch or snack, bottled water, beverage, etc. Bring a walking stick and camera if desired.
Wear: Comfortable and sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather, rain or shine. Dressing in layers is recommended for this type of activity. Wear a hat and raincoat, and bring an umbrella if necessary.
